Dr. Maria Smith’s passion for dentistry and her dedication to her patients' well-being are not only results of extensive training but also of a rich family legacy. Born and raised right here in Huntington/Shelton, she witnessed firsthand the positive impact her father, Dr. Charles E. Smith, had on the community through his dental practice. This early exposure to the noble art of creating beautiful, healthy smiles laid the foundation for her own remarkable career.
Comprehensive Education and Clinical Experience
Following her father's footsteps, Dr. Maria Smith pursued her dream of becoming a dentist, attending local schools and graduating with honors from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She earned her BA in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, demonstrating her strong commitment to scientific understanding. Her journey continued at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, where she received her dental degree in 1985. Upon graduation, she joined her father, Dr. Charles E. Smith, in private practice, starting a new chapter of collaborative dental care in Shelton.

Dr. Maria Smith is a firm believer that the field of dentistry is constantly evolving and that continuing education is essential for providing the highest standard of care to her patients. Throughout her distinguished career, she has dedicated numerous hours to both lectures and hands-on training, keeping up-to-date with the latest advancements in dental technology and techniques. Her passion for advanced learning led her to complete the rigorous 6-year postgraduate continuum at the renowned Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Learning in Key Biscayne, FL.
The Pankey Institute's philosophy emphasizes a holistic approach to dentistry, focusing on technical skills, patient communication, and comprehensive treatment planning. Dr. Smith’s commitment to lifelong learning is further evidenced by her Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, a distinction awarded only after completing over 1100 hours of continuing education, passing a comprehensive exam, and demonstrating significant dedication to the profession.

Outside of her thriving dental practice, Dr. Maria Smith enjoys a fulfilling personal life with her husband, Dr. Thomas Gorman, and their cherished animal companions – including two show dogs and three rescue cats. Her love for life and her diverse interests contribute to her vibrant personality and her compassionate approach to patient care.
